The prediction of interviewed football fans in Kumasi ahead of the opening match of the FIFA World Cup is that Mexico will beat South Africa.

While they gear up for the opening match of the FIFA World Cup, many residents in Kumasi are placing their bets on Mexico to secure victory over South Africa in the tournament’s first game.

A street survey conducted by Orange News revealed that five out of seven people interviewed believe Mexico will win the game, while two respondents tipped South Africa to win.

However, the reasons of these football fans behind the predictions extended beyond football. Those supporting South Africa said their choice was rooted in continental solidarity, arguing that Africans should support fellow African nations on the global stage.

“South Africa is representing Africa, so we have to support our own,” was a common sentiment among those backing Bafana Bafana.

However, many of those predicting Mexico to beat South Africa pointed to recent xenophobic attacks against other Africans in South Africa as influencing their decision. Several respondents said they found it difficult to support South Africa because of past incidents in which African migrants and foreign nationals were targeted.

“Because of the way some Africans have been treated in South Africa, I want Mexico to win,” one respondent said.

The responses highlight how football can often intersect with broader social and political issues, with personal experiences and perceptions shaping support for teams as much as performances on the pitch.

While football analysts may focus on tactics, squad strength, and recent form, many fans on the streets of Kumasi appear to be viewing the opening fixture through a wider lens.

For now, the prediction that Mexico will beat South Africa appears to have won the popular vote among those interviewed.
