Kejetia Traders Accuse Government Of Insensitivity Over Rising Transport Costs

A sharp dispute has erupted between commercial market operators and state authorities following recent transport fare increases across Ghana. Expressing deep frustration on behalf of local merchants, Reuben Ameh, Secretary for the Kejetia Traders Association, publicly accused the government of showing complete insensitivity toward the daily economic struggles of ordinary citizens.

During a broadcast interview on Orange 107.9 FM, Ameh highlighted how rising transportation fares ripple through the national supply chain. When transport unions increase fares, traders face significantly higher costs to move goods from regional farms and importers to major trading hubs like the Kejetia Market. Consequently, business owners must raise retail prices to survive, leaving everyday consumers to absorb the financial burden during an already challenging economic period.

Ameh strongly criticized decision-makers for failing to address the underlying factors that drive transportation hikes. While commercial drivers point to operational expenses, traders argue that state regulators remain passive instead of implementing effective policy interventions. According to Ameh, the government’s apparent reluctance to cushion transport costs or engage in meaningful dialogue reflects a troubling disregard for ground-level realities.

Furthermore, the Kejetia Traders Association warned that unchecked transport inflation directly threatens local commerce. High retail prices deter buyers, reduce daily market sales, and jeopardize the livelihoods of thousands of small-scale vendors who rely on steady foot traffic.

To prevent further economic strain on working families, Ameh called on public officials to immediately review transport policies and establish direct channels with market leadership. He urged state regulators to prioritize consumer protection, address transport pricing transparently, and demonstrate genuine commitment to relieving the financial pressure on Ghanaian households and small business owners.
