The opening weekend of the Premier League delivered a taste of what to expect for the remainder of the season.
It started with Arsenal thrashing newcomers Coventry City on Friday night and ended with a five-goal thriller between Fulham and Chelsea on Monday night.
The Gunners began their title defence with a 3-0 win over Frank Lampard’s men thanks to goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard.
Hull City vs Manchester United was the first game on Saturday. The Tigers scored twice in the first half and that was enough to beat the Red Devils.
Everton entertained Crystal Palace at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and secured a 2-0 victory. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry got the goals for the Toffees.
Another 2pm kick-off was between Ipswich Town and Sunderland. The newcomers stuck to their guns and handed the Black Cats a 2-1 defeat.
Nottingham Forest’s first game did not go as planned as they lost 1-0 at home to Leeds United.
The shock result of the day came at the Brentford Community Stadium, where Brentford ran riot against Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester City left it late at the Etihad as they came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1, courtesy of goals from Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol.
Aston Villa went to the Amex Stadium and were given the beating of their lives by Brighton. The Seagulls scored four unanswered goals to kick off their campaign.
Newcastle hosted Liverpool at St James’ Park and were close to taking all three points, but the Reds fought back to secure a point.
The final game of the gameweek took place at Craven Cottage. Chelsea dug deep to beat a resolute Fulham side. The Blues’ front three of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro showed their class to secure a 3-2 win.
A riveting first week of football ends with Brighton top of the table, with Arsenal, Brentford and Hull City making up the top four.
