numerous adults in Ghana may be living with high blood pressure without even knowing because it often develops without the symptoms showing.

A Cardiologist at the Kole Bu Teaching Hospital has urged Ghanaians to prioritise regular medical examinations to help detect hypertension early and reduce the risk of serious health issues that come with it.

Dr Albert Agbi said a number of adults in Ghana may be living with high blood pressure without even knowing because it often develops without symptoms showing.

The doctor, in an interview, explained that roughly 34 per cent, meaning three to four out of every 10 adults, could be hypertensive.

He also said the absence of symptoms should not mean that a person has a normal blood pressure, explaining that the first indication may be the complications, which show the person has been living with the condition.

“A lot of people walking around and living their lives are high blood pressure patients, but they don’t experience any symptoms.

The individuals with hypertension who are on medication, especially the men, voice out that they would rather die than have erectile dysfunction”, he stressed.

Dr Agbi explained that the patients said this because some of the medications can cause weakness, and so they do not take them when they want to perform in bed.

The cardiologist therefore urged Ghanaians to go for regular checkups in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent lifestyle-related problems.
