The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school candidates, while announcing disciplinary action against hundreds of candidates for examination malpractice and withholding thousands of results for further investigations.
According to a statement issued by the Council on Wednesday, July 29, the results have been sent to schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education. Candidates may also access their results online through WAEC’s official results portal.
This year’s examination was taken by 620,243 candidates, made up of 304,415 males and 315,828 females from 20,789 schools across Ghana. The examination was conducted at 2,237 centres nationwide.
WAEC disclosed that 3,601 registered candidates were absent from the examination.
The Council also highlighted measures taken to ensure inclusive participation, stating that the examination accommodated 136 visually impaired candidates, 282 hearing-impaired candidates and 510 other candidates with special educational needs who required additional support.
Following investigations into examination irregularities and the completion of script marking, WAEC’s 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee approved sanctions against candidates who had breached examination regulations.
The Council said the subject results of 496 candidates have been cancelled, while the entire results of 105 candidates have also been cancelled.
Additionally, the subject results of 119 candidates have been withheld, while the complete results of 48 candidates remain withheld pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
WAEC further revealed that the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have also been withheld for additional scrutiny over suspected irregularities.
According to the Council, investigations into these cases are expected to be completed by August 31, 2026. Once the review process is concluded, the affected results will either be released or cancelled depending on the findings.
Candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld have been directed to WAEC’s irregularities portal to view details of the sanctions and any further actions required. School authorities can also access the information through their official login credentials.
The Council also cautioned candidates, parents and the general public to disregard individuals or groups claiming they can upgrade or alter examination results in exchange for money.
WAEC stressed that its examination results are secure, tamper-proof and fully verifiable, warning that anyone engaging with fraudsters risks losing money without any possibility of changing their results.
The Council expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, security agencies, supervisors, invigilators, examiners, school heads and other stakeholders for their support in ensuring the successful conduct of the 2026 BECE and the timely release of the provisional results.
