Ghana Condemns Killing of Citizen in South Africa, Calls for Swift Arrests

Ghana demands justice for murdered citizen in South Africa

The Government of Ghana has intensified diplomatic pressure on South Africa following the killing of a Ghanaian national during anti-immigrant demonstrations, demanding a swift investigation, the arrest of those responsible, and stronger protection for foreign nationals.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the government described the killing as a “senseless act of violence” and strongly condemned the growing wave of xenophobic attacks targeting African migrants in parts of South Africa.

The victim, identified as 40-year-old Bashiru Isak, was reportedly shot and killed on Monday, June 30, 2026, in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, during demonstrations linked to anti-immigrant violence.

The ministry said the government received news of Mr Isak’s death with “profound shock and sadness,” stressing that no individual should lose their life because of their nationality.

“The Government of Ghana condemns, in the strongest terms, this senseless act of violence and the rising tide of xenophobia targeting African nationals, including Ghanaians, in South Africa. The taking of any life is unacceptable, and those responsible must be brought to justice without delay,” the statement said.

As part of its response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs directed Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria to formally register the country’s protest with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

The High Commission has also lodged an official complaint with the South African Police Service after confirming the identity of the deceased and informing his family.

The Ghanaian government is calling for a comprehensive, transparent and expedited investigation into the incident. It wants South African authorities to identify, arrest and prosecute all individuals responsible for the killing.

Beyond seeking justice, Ghana is urging South Africa to take urgent steps to improve the safety of Ghanaians and other foreign nationals living in communities affected by xenophobic violence.

“We also reiterate our call on the South African authorities to ensure enhanced protection for all Ghanaian nationals in affected communities,” the ministry added.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where foreign nationals from several African countries have periodically been targeted during episodes of anti-immigrant unrest. Ghana’s latest diplomatic intervention underscores growing calls for stronger measures to safeguard migrants and prevent further violence.
