New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has tasked the party’s newly elected regional executives with making the 2028 general elections their central focus as the party works to rebuild its structures.
Speaking on Sunday, August 16, after the Greater Accra Regional executive elections, Dr Bawumia said the NPP’s ongoing internal reorganisation was essential to positioning the party to regain political power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He described the recent regional elections as another stage in a broader restructuring exercise that began at the grassroots level and will conclude with the election of national executives.
Reorganisation key to NPP’s 2028 strategy
Dr Bawumia noted that the party had already completed its polling station, electoral area and constituency-level elections, with regional elections now concluded.
He said the process is expected to culminate in the NPP’s national executive elections on October 10.
According to him, the completion of the reorganisation will provide the party with a stronger organisational structure ahead of the next general election.
“The goal for all of us is to win the 2028 election,” Dr Bawumia told the newly elected executives, stressing that the latest regional elections should be seen as a step towards achieving that objective.
He urged the executives to dedicate themselves to rebuilding the party and strengthening its structures at every level.
Executives tasked with greater responsibility
The former Vice President also cautioned the newly elected regional executives against treating their election as merely a personal or political achievement.
He said their new positions came with significant responsibilities, particularly as the party prepares for the 2028 polls.
Dr Bawumia said there was still substantial work to be done to reposition the NPP and build an organisation capable of mounting a strong campaign to return the party to government.
He therefore encouraged the executives to work collectively, strengthen party structures and remain committed to the reorganisation process.
The NPP lost the 2024 presidential election to the NDC and has since embarked on an internal restructuring exercise ahead of the 2028 general elections.
