Ghana is getting ready for the new cocoa farming season, and leaders are making important plans to help the industry run smoothly. During a recent meeting, leaders talked about getting enough money to buy cocoa from farmers, helping local cocoa buyers, and following new European Union rules that protect forests.
A big decision coming up is setting the price for cocoa beans. Last season, international cocoa prices dropped around the world, but Ghana’s government kept the price paid to local farmers the same so they wouldn’t lose money. Farmers were paid:
GH¢1,241.76 for a small 30\text{ kg} load
GH¢2,587 for a standard 64\text{ kg} bag
GH¢41,392 for a full tone (which is 16 big bags)
The government will soon announce the official cocoa prices for the new season. This price is very important because it determines how much money cocoa farmers earn, how buying companies pay for the crops, and how well Ghana’s cocoa industry performs overall.
