The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah failed to respond to two invitations issued in February 2026 as part of an ongoing investigation.
According to EOCO, the MP did not honour the invitations, leading the Office to initiate measures under the law to ensure his attendance. The disclosure comes after EOCO officers reportedly attempted to arrest Nana Baffour Awuah at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23.
In a statement, EOCO said its officers were acting within the law and carrying out their official duties when they moved to arrest the MP as part of the ongoing investigation.
“The Office had previously invited Hon. Baffour Awuah to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026. The invitations were not honoured,” EOCO said.
EOCO explained that the attempted arrest formed part of the lawful measures it had taken to secure the MP’s attendance after he failed to honour the earlier invitations. However, the arrest was not completed after the situation escalated, with the Office saying its officers determined that proceeding further could have posed a risk to public safety.
EOCO also said it had identified two individuals who allegedly intervened to help the MP leave the scene and was reviewing their conduct to determine whether further action was necessary. The Office confirmed that the MP later proceeded to Parliament and emphasised that it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities afforded to Members of Parliament.
EOCO, however, maintained that being a Member of Parliament does not automatically halt an investigation or exempt an individual from complying with the law.
EOCO said its investigation is still ongoing and that it will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including available video footage, before deciding on the appropriate next steps.
EOCO said the investigation remains active and that its next course of action will depend on its assessment of the incident and the available evidence. The Office reiterated that it will proceed in accordance with the law while respecting the constitutional protections applicable to Members of Parliament.
