Workers across the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are preparing to stage a major, peaceful nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. Organized by the Senior Staff Union (SSU), the Junior Staff Union (JSU), and led by the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), this countrywide action is a direct response to government proposals to introduce Private Sector Participation (PSP) into the running of ECG. The workers strongly oppose handing over operational control or ownership shares of the national power distributor to private corporations.
The peaceful protest will take place simultaneously across all ECG operational regions from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Specialized assembly points have been designated to bring staff together before the marches begin:
Accra: Staff will gather at the forecourt of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) building.
Kumasi: Workers will assemble at the ECG Regional Office near the Airport Roundabout.
Other Regions: Employees will meet at their respective local ECG regional headquarters.
During the demonstration, organized teams will deliver formal petition letters to Regional Ministers across the country. These ministers will then forward the petitions directly to President John Dramani Mahama. The petitions urge the President to halt all plans regarding private sector involvement and to keep the management of ECG fully within the public domain.
This nationwide march represents the next phase of an ongoing campaign by the utility unions. To signal their continued opposition ahead of the protest, ECG employees across the country have been wearing red armbands while performing their daily duties. To ensure the demonstration remains safe, lawful, and orderly, union leadership has formally notified the Inspector General of Police under the Public Order Act and established national and regional organizing committees to guide the day’s events.
