The Bank of Ghana (BOG) is asking everyone—including regular people, businesses, and banks—to treat paper money with care. Taking good care of money keeps cash clean and saves the government from spending extra money to replace ruined bills. This advice comes right before the Bank releases its new and improved cash, called the Heritage Series, on November 3, 2026.
Even though the new bills will be stronger and harder to tear, the Bank says people still need to handle them gently. Dominic Owusu, who is in charge of currency at the Bank of Ghana, explained that keeping cash clean helps the country save money. When cash lasts longer, the government does not have to spend as much money printing new bills.
Dr. Johnson Asiama, the head of the Bank of Ghana, said that protecting our money is a job for everyone. He asked people to stop doing things that damage cash, such as
Squeezing or crumpling bills into tight balls,Writing or drawing on paper money,Stapling notes together,Using real money to make gifts (like money bouquets) or throwing money into the air at parties.
The main reason for the new Heritage Series is to make the money safer from fake copies, harder to damage, and easier to use. The new bills will still be made of paper-like cotton, but they will have extra strength built in. They will also feature pictures and art that celebrate Ghana’s history and culture.
You do not need to worry about your current cash. The launch of the new bills will not make your old money worthless. Both the old cash and the new cash will work at the same time, so there is no need to rush to the bank to swap your money when the new bills come out on November 3, 2026.
