Several universities in Accra have suspended lectures and advised students and staff to remain indoors following widespread flooding and heavy rainfall across the capital today, 29th June, 2026.

The University of Ghana, through its academic affairs directorate, directed students to stay in their halls, homes, or current locations and not attempt to travel for lectures until the weather improves. The university also announced that all lectures have been suspended until further notice. In a separate notice, the university’s Human Resources Directorate instructed staff to remain where they are, warning that flooded roads pose significant safety risks. Supervisors have been asked to check on their teams and ensure affected staff receive the necessary support while everyone is encouraged to follow safety protocols and monitor official updates.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), also advised staff, faculty, and students who had not yet left for campus to remain at home, urging members of its community to avoid flooded roads and other high-risk areas until conditions improve.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued an urgent evacuation notice to residents living along the Weija Dam spillway. Residents in affected communities have been directed to move immediately to higher ground as a precautionary measure.

NADMO has urged the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency and rescue personnel, stay indoors where possible, and follow official updates as authorities work to manage the situation and restore normalcy.

Authorities continue to stress that public safety remains the highest priority as heavy rains persist across parts of Accra.
