The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against former presidential aspirant and former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, following several petitions accusing him of making public comments that could undermine party unity.
The decision was reached at a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council held on Thursday, June 25. The petitions have been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee, which has been given two weeks to investigate the matter and submit its recommendations.
Confirming the development in an interview, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said the party’s leadership unanimously agreed that the disciplinary committee should examine all complaints filed against Agyapong.
“The decision was that all of these petitions must be referred to the National Disciplinary Committee. Let’s manage for the next two weeks, and when we receive the report and a decision is made, it will be communicated appropriately,” Nana B stated.
Petitions Linked to Recent Public Criticism
The petitions stem from a series of public comments made by Agyapong in recent weeks, during which he criticised aspects of the previous NPP administration.
Among the issues that attracted widespread attention were his claims that the Akufo-Addo government failed to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital despite investing heavily in the project.
He also generated controversy by warning that he could “spill the beans” on alleged wrongdoing within the party if attempts were made to silence him. Those remarks sparked mixed reactions, with some party members describing them as harmful to ongoing efforts to rebuild the NPP after its defeat in the 2024 general election.
Several party members and affiliated groups subsequently petitioned the leadership, arguing that Agyapong’s comments risked deepening divisions and damaging the party’s public image.
Committee to Assess Possible Breach of Party Rules
The National Disciplinary Committee is expected to determine whether the former lawmaker’s statements violated the NPP’s constitution, code of conduct or internal regulations governing members’ public behaviour.
The committee’s findings will be submitted to the party’s leadership within two weeks, after which a final decision on the matter is expected.
A Key Figure in the NPP
Kennedy Agyapong remains one of the most influential personalities within the NPP. He finished second to former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the party’s 2023 presidential primaries and continues to enjoy considerable support among grassroots members.
Known for his outspoken style, Agyapong has often presented his criticisms as efforts to strengthen the party through frank internal reflection. However, critics argue that airing grievances publicly risks undermining the NPP’s efforts to restore unity and public confidence following its electoral defeat.
The outcome of the disciplinary process is likely to be closely watched, as it could shape not only Agyapong’s future within the party but also the NPP’s approach to balancing internal accountability with freedom of expression among its senior members.
