A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose body was discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.
The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was arrested on June 15 by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following intelligence-led operations.
According to preliminary police investigations, Michael Mensah allegedly picked up the 20-year-old Level 200 student from Ayensu Plaza within the university’s hostel enclave on June 11.
Investigators believe he subsequently transported her to Hutchland Beach, where she was reportedly last seen alive.
The arrest marks a significant development in the case, which has attracted widespread public attention and sparked concern among students and residents following the discovery of Innocentia’s body days after she was reported missing.
Earlier, police dismissed reports suggesting that some of the student’s body parts were missing, clarifying that preliminary examinations found no evidence of mutilation. Authorities stated that the only visible injury observed on the body was a bruise above one of her eyebrows.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation as police work to establish the full sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
The death of the young student has left the University of Cape Coast (UCC) community in mourning, with many students and members of the public calling for justice and a thorough investigation into the incident.
Police say further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
