The High Court in Accra has adjourned the criminal case involving NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Wontumi) to July 27 to allow ongoing plea negotiations between the prosecution and the defence.

The case was adjourned after both parties informed the court on Monday, July 6, that discussions toward a negotiated resolution were still in progress.

Chairman Wontumi has been charged with allegedly obtaining a GH¢14.3 million loan from EXIM Bank under pretenses for a farming project through Wontumi Farms Limited.

According to the prosecution, the alleged offences occurred between 2018 and 2022 and involved Chairman Wontumi and Thomas Antwi-Boasiako.

The prosecution further alleges that Chairman Wontumi submitted a forged receipt to EXIM Bank in support of an application for an additional GH¢4 million loan facility.

He also faces a money-laundering charge for allegedly benefiting from funds allegedly obtained through fraudulent means.

Prosecutors further contend that the transactions caused financial loss exceeding GH¢30 million to EXIM Bank.

The accused persons, through their legal representatives, requested plea negotiations, prompting the court to postpone proceedings.

The case is expected to return to court on July 27 for an update on the outcome of the ongoing discussions.
