Media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has responded to comments from Ghanaian influencer Harrismadeit after he described former Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah’s move into photography as a “big downgrade.”
The issue started after Harrismadeit shared a video showing Jonathan Mensah holding a professional camera while working as a photographer at a football venue. He captioned the post, “Ghana will fail you,” which sparked reactions from social media users.
The influencer, later explained his position, saying he was not suggesting that photography was a bad profession. However, he argued that moving from professional football to photography represented a significant drop in status when the two careers were compared. He further likened the situation to a president leaving office to become a party agent.
Nana Aba Anamoah disagreed with the comparison and questioned why people should measure someone’s progress based mainly on the prestige attached to their profession. She argued that Jonathan Mensah could simply have chosen to pursue a different career after football and that there was nothing inherently negative about the decision.
”No one is saying photography is a bad job. Looking at the two jobs in question, being a professional footballer and switiching to a photographer is a big setback,” he said
The broadcaster also pointed out that if Mensah is fulfilled, earning a living and doing something he enjoys, his career change should not automatically be described as a downgrade. Her response has since added to the wider social media discussion about career transitions and how society defines success.
”Herh, @1harrismadeit, what’s wrong with you? That’s the single most needless and admirably silly comparison I’ve read. Becoming a photographer after playing professional football isn’t equivalent of a president becoming a party agent. One is a career change.
”The other is moving from the highest public office in the country to a surbordinate role within a political party. But why should we measure progress by prestige alone? If he is fulfilled, earning an honest living, and doing work he genuinely enjoys, where is the downgrade in that?” she said.
