Dramatic scenes unfolded in Adabraka as residents risked their lives to rescue their animals after severe flooding submerged homes following hours of heavy rainfall across Accra. In one widely circulated video, a resident was seen swimming through chest-high floodwaters alongside his horse as both struggled to reach safety. In another, a different resident braved the raging waters to rescue his goat after floodwaters completely engulfed his home.
The viral videos have become powerful symbols of the devastation caused by the torrential rains, which began on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, leaving several communities underwater.
Flooding was reported in Adabraka, Alajo, Avenor, Circle, Dzorwulu, Weija, and Kasoa, where major roads, homes, and businesses were inundated, bringing the Monday morning commute to a standstill. In Adabraka, many homes have been rendered uninhabitable, forcing residents to wade through chest-high water in search of safety while attempting to salvage their belongings.
Emergency response teams, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Armed Forces, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), have been deployed to carry out rescue operations, monitor affected areas, and manage traffic.
The Ministry of the Interior has urged residents to avoid flooded roads, remain indoors where possible, report emergencies, and relocate to higher ground if it is safe to do so.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned that rain-bearing clouds over the southeastern parts of the country are expected to persist, bringing more rain and occasional thunderstorms before spreading westward later in the day. Northern Ghana is also forecast to experience thunderstorms from late afternoon into the evening.
