Veteran Ghanaian actor Kofi Ajorlolo has recounted a challenging period in his career when a group of local film producers allegedly barred him from appearing in Ghanaian productions for two years.
Ajorlolo said the decision left him without opportunities to work in Ghana’s film industry for the duration of the ban. He described himself as a “sacrificial lamb,” suggesting that his case was used to make a wider statement within the industry.
The actor, however, said the ban did not significantly affect his career, as he continued to receive acting opportunities from filmmakers in Nigeria.
Ajorlolo said that during the period he was being left out of Ghanaian productions, Nigerian filmmakers continued to approach him and seek his participation in their projects.
He said,“as they were banning me in Ghana here, Nigerian producers too were calling, fighting for me to come perform so it didn’t affect me.
Despite the restrictions he faced in Ghana, Ajorlolo remained active in the profession due to continued demand for his work from outside the country.
Ajorlolo revealed that the two-year restriction imposed on him was eventually lifted before the full period had elapsed.
He said the producers later reconsidered the decision, lifting the restriction after about six to eight months and inviting him to return to work.
He recalled,“ after six or eight months or so,they themselves just pulled that thing out that I should come back”.
Looking back on the incident, the veteran actor said he felt he had been intentionally targeted during the dispute.
He stated,“so they used me as a sacrificial lamb. That was the first time.”
Ajorlolo’s experience sheds light on the tensions and disagreements that can sometimes arise behind the scenes within Ghana’s film industry.
Although he was temporarily sidelined from Ghanaian productions, Ajorlolo continued working with Nigerian filmmakers, allowing him to remain active and sustain his presence across the wider West African film industry.
Ajorlolo’s account highlights how industry disputes can affect opportunities for actors, while also showing how continued demand from filmmakers outside Ghana helped him remain active throughout the period.
