The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed traders and other commercial operators occupying portions of the Agbogbloshie area to vacate the affected sites by August 28, 2026, to make way for the construction of a new 24-Hour Economy Market.
The affected areas include the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, the Nzema Market and portions of the Yam Market.
According to the AMA, the vacation notice was formally served on Tuesday, August 4, and will expire on August 28. The Assembly says it will begin removing structures within the designated project areas after the deadline.
The redevelopment is part of efforts to support the government’s 24-Hour Economy programme through the construction of a dedicated market facility designed to support commercial activities.
Traders to be relocated
The AMA says traders and other commercial operators affected by the redevelopment will not be left without an alternative trading location.
A parcel of land has been prepared by the Assembly to accommodate those affected by the exercise, with the relocation forming part of the arrangements for the redevelopment.
The Assembly has urged affected persons to take note of the August 28 deadline and make the necessary preparations to move to the designated relocation site.
Consultations precede clearance
The planned redevelopment follows consultations between the AMA and various stakeholders, including traditional authorities, market leaders, traders and community representatives.
As part of preparations for the project, the Assembly began marking structures located within the areas earmarked for redevelopment.
The AMA also commenced a public education and sensitisation exercise on Wednesday, August 5, to engage traders, residents and community leaders on the planned clearance.
The campaign is aimed at explaining the redevelopment project, the clearance process and the arrangements being made for the relocation of affected traders and occupants.
The Assembly is also using the engagement to highlight the expected benefits of the proposed market facility.
AMA urges affected occupants to prepare
With the August 28 deadline approaching, the AMA has urged all affected traders and commercial operators to comply with the notice and relocate to the designated site.
The Assembly says the redevelopment will contribute to the implementation of the government’s 24-Hour Economy programme by providing a purpose-built market facility in the Agbogbloshie area.
