Parliament has commemorated the 14th anniversary of the passing of former President Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, with Members of Parliament paying tribute to his leadership and lasting contributions to Ghana’s democratic development.
The remembrance was marked by a statement on the floor of the House by the Member of Parliament for Ekumfi, Dr Othniel Ekow Kwainoe, who described the late President as a distinguished statesman whose leadership was defined by humility, compassion and selfless service to the nation.
According to Dr Kwainoe, Professor Atta Mills exemplified integrity in public office and remained committed to promoting national unity, peace and democratic governance throughout his time in leadership.
Following the statement, Members of Parliament reflected on the former President’s enduring legacy, highlighting the values that characterised his public life, including humility, honesty and his dedication to fostering peace and stability in the country.
Several MPs noted that Professor Atta Mills’ approach to governance continues to serve as an example of principled leadership, with his emphasis on dialogue, tolerance and national cohesion remaining relevant to Ghana’s democratic journey.
The parliamentary tribute formed part of activities marking 14 years since the former President’s passing, providing lawmakers with an opportunity to honour his memory and acknowledge the impact of his service on the country’s political history.
Professor Atta Mills, who served as President of Ghana from 2009 until he died in office in 2012, is widely remembered for his calm leadership style, commitment to constitutional governance and efforts to promote peace and unity. Fourteen years after his passing, Parliament says his values and contributions continue to inspire public service and national development.
