A man who rushed into floodwaters to save others has become one of the victims of Monday’s devastating floods in Adabraka.
Residents say the deceased, affectionately known as Alaji, lost his life while attempting to rescue people trapped by the rising waters, leaving the community in mourning over what they describe as a selfless act of bravery.
According to residents, Alaji was well known for risking his own life to help others whenever flooding hit the area.
A close companion recounted the heartbreaking moment he saw Alaji struggling in the floodwaters after rescuing another victim.
The Assembly Member for the area said Alaji had a long history of volunteering during floods to rescue stranded residents.
“Whenever flooding occurred in Adabraka, Alaji was always among the first to help rescue people. On Monday, he went out again to save others, but unfortunately, he got trapped in the floodwaters. At first, witnesses only saw someone struggling with a raised hand before disappearing beneath the water. It was only later, when Alaji could not be found, that we realised he was the victim,” he said.
He added that Alaji’s body was later recovered and handed over to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Alaji’s family declined to speak to the media as they prepared to lay him to rest, while residents continue to remember him as a courageous man whose final act was one of service to others.
