MTN Ghana is set to utilise newly awarded 5G spectrum valued at US$202 million to increase network capacity and improve service delivery across the country as part of its efforts.
The additional spectrum will support growing demand for faster internet connectivity and help expand 5G mobile services and home broadband.
The development follows a notification from the National Communications Authority (NCA) confirming that MTN Ghana has been allocated spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands for 5G and mobile broadband services.
The licences are valid for 15 years. MTN Ghana has been allocated two 20 MHz lots in the 700 MHz band and 150 MHz in the 3 GHz band.
The company will pay a combined US$202 million for the allocations, with US$100.9 million covering the 700 MHz spectrum and US$101.1 million for the 3 GHz spectrum.
MTN Ghana said it is completing the required processes and payment arrangements for the licences. The company added that the spectrum costs have already been factored into its equity free cash flow projections.
MTN Ghana said the newly acquired spectrum will complement its existing spectrum resources and provide additional capacity to meet increasing data demand.
According to the company, the investment is expected to improve network performance, enhance service quality and provide customers with a better connectivity experience.
“Following the issuance of the spectrum licences, the Company will use the 5G spectrum in addition to its existing spectrum stock to strengthen network capacity, enhance service quality, and improve customer experience across Ghana,” the company said.
The company said the additional spectrum will also help speed up the expansion of 5G mobile services and support its home connectivity plans.
The increased network capacity is expected to enable MTN Ghana to handle more high-speed connections and rising data traffic from households and businesses.
The acquisition marks a significant increase in MTN Ghana’s spectrum resources and is expected to strengthen the company’s ability to expand 5G services as demand for faster and more reliable connectivity grows.
MTN Ghana said it will continue to provide updates on significant developments as it completes the licensing process and proceeds with the rollout of the newly awarded spectrum and 5G services.
