The government of Equatorial Guinea has resigned after failing to achieve key performance targets, according to Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue.
The Vice-President announced that Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua had submitted the resignation of the entire government after it reportedly achieved less than 10 percent of its objectives.
In a statement, Mr. Obiang said the decision reflects the principle that public officials must be held accountable for results.
The ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) said President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo was dissatisfied with the outgoing government’s performance, citing corruption, misuse of state resources, and delays in the implementation of development projects.
The statement also highlighted the government’s failure to diversify the country’s economy, particularly in the agricultural sector.
President Obiang reportedly expressed concern that Equatorial Guinea continues to depend heavily on imports despite having the capacity to produce many goods locally.
A new government is expected to be appointed in the coming days.
Equatorial Guinea remains heavily dependent on oil and gas revenues, which account for the majority of the country’s exports and government income. However, despite its vast natural resources, poverty remains widespread among much of the country’s population.
The economy has also struggled in recent years due to declining oil production and reduced global demand.
