Betty Akamani, aged 35, is an academic and research professional who has come into the spotlight following the death of her husband, Ghanaian academic Dr Kofi Akamani, in Illinois, United States.
Dr Akamani, a professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU), was shot on September 19, 2026, and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Betty has since been arrested and charged in connection with his death.
According to reports, Betty appeared before a Jackson County court on September 21, where she faced two counts of first-degree murder and a charge relating to the endangerment of a child. Prosecutors have also presented allegations concerning statements Betty allegedly made during police interviews. These claims form part of the ongoing case and have not been established as facts in court. Betty is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Betty Akamani has an academic background in psychology and research, having studied at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Illinois. According to a 2021 SIU publication, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the university and went on to pursue a Master of Science degree in Applied Psychology.
During her time at SIU, Akamani was involved in academic research. She worked as a research assistant in the Barriers to Reducing Crime Lab, where her research interests included attitudes, bias, prejudice, child trauma and interventions. These areas of psychology focus on understanding how people’s beliefs and experiences can influence their behaviour and how interventions can be developed to address social and psychological challenges.
Her interest in psychology also extended into social psychology and the relationship between human behaviour and the law. A profile from SIU’s Social Psychology and Law Laboratory identifies Akamani as a research assistant whose interests included prejudice, implicit bias and psychosocial interventions. The same profile indicates that she had previously earned an Associate of Arts degree from John A. Logan College before continuing her studies at SIU.
Akamani later continued her academic development in psychology. Recent reporting has identified her as pursuing doctoral studies in psychology at Capella University. Her professional profile also lists experience in research and data-related work, including projects involving surveys and research analysis.
