The Deputy Managing Director for Finance and Administration of the State Transport Company (STC), Nuru Hamidan, has clarified a viral video involving the driver of an STC bus involved in an accident on Monday, August 3, 2026, explaining that the driver’s claim that only about 10 passengers escaped was based on what he personally witnessed immediately after the crash.
Mr Hamidan explained that the driver was not granting an interview but was speaking in a private conversation while still traumatised by the incident.
Speaking on the Orange Sunrise this morning, he said the driver’s account reflected only the number of passengers he saw leaving through the front door of the bus.
He added that although the bus got burnt, all passengers and the driver were safe
” We went to Koforidua and met him together with all the passengers, and we brought all of them in a car. He is doing well; my people spoke to him yesterday, and the driver is in good health”, he said.
The Deputy Managing Director for Finance and Administration of the State Transport Company (STC) also clarified that no STC passenger died as a result of the fire that ravaged the bus.
” The explosion of a fuel tanker is not a joke. All neighbouring vehicles may be affected. And the immediate car next to it, aside from the private car, was the STC bus, so the fire started from the front, but thankfully, before the fire got into the car, all our passengers were able to get out of the car”, he stated.
Mr Nuru revealed that the last passenger managed to escape with burns on the hand but was stabilised in a hospital and later discharged.
He also expressed optimism that the completion of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway would help reduce accidents
“The good news that refreshes us as a company is that His Excellency the President has promised and not only promised but has started work in dualising the Kumasi Highway. I believe that when this project is completed, it is going to change the face of transport and help us a lot, so we are very excited about that project”, he said.
Mr Hamidan also urged road users to be cautious when driving to reduce preventable accidents.
” Having better roads does not stop accidents; what is important is for us to be cautious. In fact, with the attitude of some of our road users, I am even afraid that when we get better roads, the rate of accidents will be higher because people will be speeding. We need to ensure some discipline on our roads”, he stressed.
