Assembly members in Ejisu have suspended their planned vote of no confidence against Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Jerryne Asante. The move follows an intervention by President John Dramani Mahama.
The assembly members gave the MCE one week to resign or face removal. They cited serious administrative failures under her leadership as the reason for their decision.
“However, the deadline passed on Friday, July 31, without any action. This came after the President formed a fact-finding committee, chaired by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene, to investigate the Assembly Members’ concerns.”
The Assembly Members for Ejisu have paused their plan to pass a vote of no confidence against the MCE, awaiting the outcome of a presidential intervention.
Speaking to the media on Monday, August 3, assembly spokesperson and Kwamo Electoral Area representative George Kuntu Blankson noted that the fact-finding committee offers a fair opportunity to investigate the issues before any further action is taken.
The members had previously scheduled an emergency meeting to begin the removal process, but it could not proceed because the Electoral Commission was unavailable to supervise the vote.
The Assembly auditorium—designated as the meeting venue—was locked. Some Assembly Members alleged that estate officers told them the MCE’s personal aide had locked the facility and taken the keys.
According to Kuntu Blankson, the Assembly Members remain firm in their stance and expect the President to address their demands once the fact-finding committee finishes its work.
“We are waiting for the President to act on our concerns this month. If he grants our request by the end of the month, we will be satisfied. If not, they will hear from us,” he said.
