Lawyer Lom Nuku has stated that private security groups are not legally permitted to possess firearms, following the shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Adwoa Safo, at the Christo Asafo Church leadership ceremony.
The incident, which has attracted national attention, occurred during a ceremony held amid an ongoing leadership dispute within the church following the death of its founder, Apostle Dr. Ing. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, in September 2025.
Reports indicate that prior to the event, two senior members of the church had sought a court injunction to stop the ceremony. Despite the legal action, the programme went ahead and later descended into chaos, resulting in the shooting of Adwoa Safo and the arrest of 6 individuals by the police.
Speaking on JoyNews, Lom Nuku said one of the key issues investigators must examine is the alleged involvement of members of the church’s private security unit.
According to him, Ghanaian law does not permit private security groups to carry firearms. “You can get a licensed firearm as an individual in your home to have it to protect yourself, but not so that you have it as a private security group. You are not authorized to do that. Only the Ghana Police can do that,” he said.
Mr. Nuku noted that the question of how the firearms were obtained and used is one that must be answered through ongoing investigations.
The police are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether any laws governing the possession and use of firearms were breached.
