A sharp rift has emerged between commercial transport operators and automotive component vendors across Ghana. This tension follows claims that rising spare parts prices are driving a proposed 30 per cent hike in transport fares.
However, the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association firmly pushed back against these assertions. They described statements from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road and Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) as misleading and unfounded.
In an official public statement, the association clarified that prices for essential automotive supplies have remained completely stable. Key components—including engine oil, replacement filters, and routine maintenance parts—have not seen price increases or new import tariffs.
According to the dealers, stock levels at the primary Abossey Okai hub remain steady. Therefore, current market conditions do not justify any cost-driven adjustment to commercial transport fares.
The association further challenged the internal logic of the transport unions’ arguments. Dealers highlighted previous declarations by commercial drivers, who claimed to purchase most of their replacement parts online rather than from local physical markets. Consequently, the association questioned how prices at the Abossey Okai market could serve as the primary catalyst for a nationwide 30 per cent fare increase.
Rather than reflecting genuine operational cost pressures, spare parts dealers argue that transport operators are using these claims to exploit commuters and pressure regulatory authorities. In addition, the association warned that unsubstantiated price hikes place an unfair financial burden on ordinary citizens who rely on public transportation daily.
To resolve the dispute, the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association is urging all commercial transport unions and government regulators to ground fare negotiations in verifiable economic data.
They advocate for complete transparency in future transport policy discussions. Ultimately, they urge driver organisations to engage constructively with state regulatory bodies, market stakeholders, and passenger representatives to establish fair, evidence-based fare structures.
