Police have commenced investigations into the killing of a Nigerian national in Tamale after two of the victim’s housemates were arrested while allegedly attempting to flee Ghana through the country’s eastern border.
The Northern Regional Police Command says Daniel Victor Eze and David Oko Ewa, both Nigerian nationals, were apprehended at Tatale following intelligence-led operations after the death of 36-year-old Nkemujika Uzorchuku Eze.
According to police, the victim’s body was discovered in his bedroom at Sanzirigu, a suburb of Tamale, on Saturday after officers responded to a report that he had been found lying motionless.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased shared a three-bedroom apartment with his wife, Peace Uzorchuku, the two suspects and another Nigerian national identified as Godwin Nwafor.
When investigators examined the scene, they found the victim lying in a pool of blood with a deep cut to his forehead. A towel had been stuffed into his mouth, while the bedroom showed signs of being ransacked.
Police recovered a wooden pestle believed to have been used in the attack, along with other materials that have been submitted for forensic examination.
The victim was transported to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead. His body has since been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary pending an autopsy.
Investigators say the suspects were intercepted at Tatale after allegedly attempting to escape into neighbouring Togo shortly after the incident. They were subsequently transferred to the Tamale District Criminal Investigations Department to assist with ongoing investigations.
Police further disclosed that during questioning, the two suspects allegedly admitted to planning and carrying out the killing. They reportedly claimed the deceased had been withholding money generated from suspected internet fraud activities in which they were all involved. The claims remain part of the ongoing investigation and are yet to be tested in court.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of several items believed to have been taken from the deceased’s room, including mobile phones, laptop computers, a tablet, jewellery, wristwatches, clothing, personal documents and other valuables. The recovered items have been retained as exhibits.
The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to appear before the court on Monday, July 13, as investigators seek orders to continue their inquiries.
Police say investigations remain active, with forensic analysis of the recovered exhibits underway. Officers are also working to obtain CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing.
