NPP to March on EOCO Over Arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to stage a march to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Monday, July 13, to demand an official explanation for the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The announcement was made by the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, who said the demonstration is intended to seek answers from EOCO regarding the circumstances surrounding Aboagye’s detention.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, July 12, Nana Boakye maintained that neither Aboagye nor the party had received any indication that he was under investigation before his arrest.

“Miracles has not received any invitation from EOCO. He has not been informed of any wrongdoing. He has not been told that he is under any form of investigation,” he said.

According to Nana Boakye, the NPP supports lawful investigations and believes no individual should be shielded from accountability. However, he argued that investigative bodies must adhere to due process and respect the constitutional rights of persons under investigation or detention.

He further alleged that the arrest reflects what the party views as an increasing pattern of the use of state institutions to target political opponents, warning that such actions could weaken public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.

The planned march comes a day after the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, disclosed in a Facebook post that Aboagye had been arrested by EOCO officers at the Accra International Airport with the assistance of Immigration officials.

Mr Kodua also alleged that Aboagye’s lawyers had been denied access to him following the arrest, that his family had not been informed of his whereabouts, and that no formal charges had been communicated against him.

The NPP has called on EOCO to provide clarity on the arrest, allow unrestricted access to legal representation and ensure that all constitutional safeguards are observed throughout the process.

At the time of publication, EOCO had not issued an official statement on Aboagye’s arrest or responded publicly to the allegations made by the opposition party regarding his detention and access to legal counsel.
