Police Probe Circumstances Surrounding Death of Mfantsipim Student

Mfantsipim

The Mfantsipim School community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a 17-year-old final-year student whose body was discovered in Cape Coast under circumstances that have prompted police investigations.

The deceased, Emmanuel Arthur, was preparing to sit this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) when his body was found in an uncompleted building at Ola North, a suburb of Cape Coast.

According to the Central Regional Police Command, officers were alerted to the discovery after a carpenter working near the structure reported the incident to authorities on June 11, 2026.

Police investigators who visited the scene recovered several personal belongings. Among the items found were a backpack containing academic materials, including a Geography mock examination paper bearing his name, as well as mobile phones and other personal effects.

The recovered materials enabled investigators to establish the student’s identity and contact authorities at Mfantsipim School, who subsequently confirmed that Emmanuel Arthur was a final-year student of the institution. His family was later informed and assisted with the identification process.

Police indicated that the body had been at the location for some time before it was discovered. Following the necessary medical examination at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, the remains were released to the family for burial.

As part of post-recovery safety measures, the uncompleted structure where the body was found was fumigated.

While police have concluded their investigation into the immediate cause of death, authorities say efforts are still ongoing to establish the circumstances and factors that may have preceded the tragedy.

The incident has generated concern among students, parents, and education stakeholders, particularly as it involves a young person preparing for a major academic examination.

The loss has also renewed discussions about the importance of emotional well-being, guidance, and support systems for students facing academic and personal challenges.

Mfantsipim School, one of Ghana’s most respected second-cycle institutions, has yet to publicly comment on the incident, but members of the school community continue to mourn the loss of a student whose life was cut short just weeks before the start of the WASSCE.
