The National Commission for Civic Education and the European Union organized Civic 2024 on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at the GNAT Hall in Accra. The aim of this program was to enlighten the Ghanaian youth on the importance of peaceful elections for effective nation-building ahead of the Ghana elections 2024 through a variety of fun activities.
Through the combined efforts of the EU and the NCCE, a large number of young people from various senior high schools in Accra attended the event to engage in youth-supporting democracy and standing against corrupt practices.
The European Union representative, Silvia Tizzi indicated that the youth have a very important role to play in maintaining peace and stability throughout the election year.
“The youth are not only beneficiaries of policies, they play a very important role in maintaining the nation’s peace especially during the election.”- Tizzi emphasised
Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education, Kathleen Addy, also urged the youth to be considerate in the kind of content they share on social media ahead of the December 7 general elections.
“Many of you were born at an age that has seen a lot of change regarding the way information is shared. Because of social media, sharing false news has become very easy.” she noted
She clarified that false information might potentially interfere with the proper conduct of elections and could only be spread by specific individuals in an effort to damage the reputation of their opponents or subjective opposition in society.
“You are young, so you have greater destinies than most of us who have already gone ahead. The change starts with you; do not engage in sharing fake news; when someone shares false information with you, do not share it; tell the person not to share such things with you again.”
Religious tolerance, misinformation, disinformation, and fake news, money in politics, and violence were the four main areas addressed at the Civic Fest 2024, which had the theme “Together We Can Build Ghana, So Get Involved.”
