Nana Kwame Bediako Reveals 8,000 km Railway Vision For Ghanaians

Nana Kwame Bediako, leader of the New Force Movement, has disclosed an infrastructure plan that could improve Ghana’s transportation sector

Nana Kwame Bediako, leader of the New Force Movement, has reveiled an ambitious infrastructure plan that could revolutionize Ghana’s transportation and logistics sectors. At the launch of his party’s manifesto, Bediako detailed a vision to construct an 8,000-kilometer railway network, positioning it as a cornerstone of the party’s agenda.

“Our goal is to build a railway network that spans over 8,000 kilometres, requiring 1.5 million tons of steel,” Bediako stated, emphasizing the significance of tapping into Ghana’s iron ore reserves to support the project. He highlighted that Ghana can reduce dependence on imported materials by using domestic resources and boost its industrial capabilities.

The proposed railway network, estimated to cost billions, would connect vital corridors like the Eastern and Western routes, extending to Ghana’s borders with Togo, Burkina Faso, and Ivory Coast. “We are not just relying on colonial-era roads; we are creating new pathways to distribute our goods,” Bediako said, signalling a shift in how Ghana will approach trade and transport.

Like Europe’s cross-border rail systems, Bediako hinted at the potential for Ghanaian companies to expand the railway system into neighbouring countries. “With steel, skills, and industrial power, Ghana can lead the way,” he remarked, drawing comparisons to historical European infrastructure projects.

This railway project is part of the New Force Movement’s “Pillar 2,” which focuses on connectivity, particularly in transportation by water and rail, to fuel Ghana’s future growth. “The moon needs the sun to shine,” Bediako said, underscoring the interconnectedness of his vision for the nation.

As the manifesto launch sets the stage for the upcoming elections, Bediako’s transformative railway plan is expected to be a major talking point. 9 Life Lessons You Should Never Forget

Life Lessons

Life is a journey filled with ups and downs, successes and mistakes. While we all make mistakes, there are some that cut deeper, leaving lessons we wish we had learned earlier. These are the lessons that, if you’re mindful of them, can save you heartache and help you live a life with more purpose, fulfillment, and peace. Let’s get into 9 key life lessons that you should never forget—because making these mistakes once is enough!

1. Trusting the Wrong People

We’ve all been there — trusting someone who later betrays us. It’s painful and can shake your ability to trust others again. But here’s the thing: it’s not about closing yourself off completely. Instead, it’s about learning to be more discerning. Look for actions over words and trust slowly. Not everyone deserves a seat at your table, and that’s okay. Learn from past experiences to make better judgments moving forward.

 Life Lessons

2. Settling for Less Than You Deserve

Ever stayed in a relationship, job, or situation that didn’t serve you? Settling for less than you deserve can lead to dissatisfaction and regrets. You are worthy of more — in your career, your relationships, and your personal goals. Stop accepting less, and start striving for what truly aligns with your values and aspirations. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

3. Ignoring Personal Boundaries

How often do you say “yes” when you really want to say “no”? Neglecting personal boundaries leads to resentment, burnout, and feeling taken advantage of. You have the right to set clear, firm boundaries that protect your well-being. Communicate them confidently, and don’t be afraid to enforce them. You deserve a healthy balance between your needs and the needs of others.

4. Neglecting Self-Care and Well-Being

In a world that glorifies hustle, it’s easy to put yourself last. But neglecting your self-care — whether it’s your physical health, mental well-being, or simply taking time for yourself — leads to burnout and diminished happiness. Make yourself a priority. Whether it’s taking a walk, practicing mindfulness, or just getting enough sleep, investing in your well-being is one of the most important commitments you can make.

5. Not Pursuing Your Passions or Dreams

How many times have you let fear or doubt hold you back from chasing your dreams? It’s easy to let societal expectations or self-doubt get in the way. But when you look back on your life, do you want to feel regret for the things you didn’t do? Take the risk. Pursue your passions. Even if it’s scary, the personal fulfillment that comes from following your dreams is worth it.

6. Taking People for Granted

We’ve all taken someone for granted at some point in our lives. It’s easy to assume that people will always be there — until they’re not. When you start to feel what it’s like to be taken for granted, you realize just how hurtful it can be. Make it a point to appreciate the people in your life. Show them they matter to you before it’s too late.

7. Lying to Fit In

Remember that time you pretended to be someone you weren’t, just to fit in? Maybe you lied or put on a facade just to gain acceptance. I’ve been there, too. But here’s the truth: wearing a mask is exhausting, and being someone you’re not is never worth it. Be your authentic self. The right people will accept you for who you are — no lies necessary.

8. Hurting Someone Who Can’t Defend Themselves

Hurting someone who can’t defend themselves is something that sticks with you. It might have happened long ago, but the memory lingers. I still remember being rude to a girl in my class simply because she was different. That was the first and last time I intentionally hurt someone. It’s a painful lesson, but one that reminds us to be kind, especially to those who are vulnerable.

9. People Pleasing

Here’s the thing about people-pleasing — everyone does it to some extent, but it’s draining and unsustainable. You shouldn’t have to wear a mask or change who you are just to make others like you. Stop hiding behind what you think others want you to be. Be kind, yes, but most importantly, be yourself. The right people will appreciate the real you.

Each person’s journey is unique, and the mistakes we make along the way are part of what shapes us. The key is to learn from these experiences and grow, making sure that you don’t repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

If you resonate with any of these lessons, make today the day you start doing things differently. MTN Ghana Cautions Customers to Use Strong MoMo PINs

MTN Ghana

MTN Ghana is urging its customers to avoid using their date of birth or mobile phone number as their Mobile Money (MoMo) PIN, warning that these choices make it easy for fraudsters to gain access to accounts. This caution was shared during an anti-fraud roadshow held in Lapaz, Accra, as part of MTN’s efforts to protect its mobile money users from rising fraudulent activities.

Rena Ankrah, Manager for AML-CFT and Head of Fraud at MTN Ghana, emphasized the risks of using simple, easily guessable PINs. “Fraudsters target your date of birth and phone number to hack into your MoMo account once they get hold of your phone. That’s why we’re advising everyone to choose strong, unpredictable PINs,” she explained.

The campaign, dubbed the “MTN MoMo Fraud Roadshow,” is part of MTN’s wider initiative to educate the public on securing their accounts and recognizing potential scams. Ankrah highlighted the growing sophistication of fraudsters, making it essential for customers to stay vigilant against suspicious messages and calls.

She also outlined some of the security measures MTN Ghana has in place to combat fraud, including SMS filtering, IMEI blocking, and partnerships with other telecom companies. However, she stressed the importance of customers playing an active role in their own security by using complex PINs and staying alert.

“As we mark our 15th anniversary with exciting prizes, we remind our customers that MTN will never ask for personal information or send a prize-winning message riddled with typos. Always verify the caller’s number and remember, MTN will contact you through 0244300000 if you’ve won,” Ankrah said.

In addition, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has introduced the *402# short code, enabling customers to verify which numbers are linked to their Ghana Card, further enhancing mobile account security.

The roadshow also featured an engaging drama, showing how fraudsters pose as MTN agents to deceive unsuspecting customers. Many attendees, including MTN customers and Lapaz residents, took part in the event and walked away with exciting prizes, reinforcing MTN’s commitment to safeguarding the mobile money ecosystem.

The Devastating Impact of Illegal Mining in Ghana

It is both shocking and deeply concerning that a significant number of individuals involved in illegal mining in Ghana have families—wives and children—who hold dual citizenship.

These miners, driven by selfish greed, are not only plundering the nation’s resources but are also laying waste to our forest reserves and polluting our water bodies with impunity.

What makes this situation even more alarming is the fact that these individuals are fully aware of the long-term destruction they are causing.

They know that their children, who hold foreign citizenship, will not reside in Ghana to suffer the consequences of the environmental catastrophe they are creating.

This blatant disregard for the future of our country and its people is unacceptable and must be addressed with the full force of the law.

The NDC remains committed to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring that the future generations of Ghanaians have a safe and sustainable environment in which to thrive.

“We call on all citizens to join us in the fight against illegal mining and to hold accountable those who, in their pursuit of profit, seek to destroy our beloved nation.”

Scheduled to take place on October 16 and 17 in Kumasi, the event aims to equip young Ghanaians with the necessary tools and knowledge to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market.

With Ghana currently facing a youth unemployment rate of approximately 14.7%, the fair comes at a crucial time to provide support and opportunities for over 1.3 million unemployed young people aged 15 to 35.

Particularly focusing on vulnerable groups such as females, who experience higher unemployment rates, the fair seeks to bridge the gap between job seekers and available opportunities.

He said the event will focus on digital transformation, entrepreneurship, and skilled migration as key pillars of support for the attendees.

Mr. Berding further indicated that, since its inception in 2019, the Ghana Career and Migration Fair has made a significant impact by linking over 16,891 job seekers with 413 employers, leading to the filling of more than 1,258 job vacancies.

“As we launch this year’s fair, we are confident that it will continue to serve as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for positive change in the lives of our young people”, he said.

The Ghanaian-European Centre, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and co-funded by the European Union, has played a crucial role in fostering connections and providing vital resources for career development.

Arnold Asafu-Adjaye, the Project Manager for Wealth and Jobs Agency, stated the significant unemployment rate in the nation and stressed the urgent need for action to prevent potential national security implications.

He emphasized the importance of the upcoming Ghana Career and Migration Fair, scheduled for October 16 and 17, 2024, as a key initiative to address the unemployment rate effectively.

Frederick Abakah, the Deputy Chief Labour Officer at the Labour Department, also expressed concern about the unemployment crisis and praised the Career and Migration Fair as a pivotal step in combating the issue.

Mr. Jeffery Oppong Peprah, the Chief Executive Officer of VOLKSWAGEN GHANA and Vice President of the Africa Automotive Manufacturers Association, expressed their commitment to advancing the Auto Industry in Ghana and stressed the importance of skill development among the youth.

Africa’s Food Processing Industry Encouraged to be More Innovative

food processing industry

As Africa’s youth population surges, with an estimated one billion young people aged between 15 and 35 by 2063, the food processing industry emerges as a vital sector for sustainable employment. Currently, it already accounts for nearly one-third of total manufacturing jobs in sub-Saharan Africa.

A new report by the Malabo Montpellier Panel highlights how the growing “triple pull” in food demand creates tremendous opportunities for Africa’s food processors, provided they enhance their competitiveness. The report, titled VALUE-UP: Policy Innovations to Advance Africa’s Food Processing Sector for Growth, Jobs, and Health, dives deep into the transformative potential of food processing in Africa, with a specific focus on Ghana, Kenya, and Senegal. These nations have enacted policy and institutional reforms to foster a thriving environment for the food processing sector.

The report offers a strategic framework for African governments to capitalize on changing market demands, allowing them to strengthen domestic food processing rather than relying on food imports.

food processing industry

“A vibrant food processing sector creates jobs,” said Prof. Joachim von Braun, a leading academic from the University of Bonn’s Center for Development Research (ZEF). “If carefully developed, Africa’s food processing industry can provide nutritious, convenient, and shelf-stable foods, improving well-being, especially for women and children, while driving sustainable economic growth.”

Dr. Ousmane Badiane, Co-Chair of the Malabo Montpellier Panel, echoed this sentiment, pointing to Africa’s rising urban population and wealthier middle class, which increasingly demands ready-to-eat, ready-to-cook, and easy-to-prepare processed foods. He emphasized that the food processing sector must rapidly evolve to meet these changing demands.

Africa’s population is projected to grow by 2.5% annually, doubling from 1.2 billion in 2016 to 2.4 billion by 2050. Urbanization is set to surge, with 60% of Africans expected to live in cities by mid-century, and the middle class could account for 42% of the population by 2060.

Josefa Sacko, Commissioner for Agriculture at the African Union Commission, urged governments to implement robust strategies to fully develop Africa’s agro-food processing sector, emphasizing its potential for job creation. “Africa’s agricultural transformation has been slower than expected due to challenges like climate change and global economic disruptions. We must align with global trends, particularly the SDGs, to make meaningful progress,” she noted.

During the 14th Meeting of the Malabo Montpellier Forum, African ministers, senior representatives, and development partners convened to discuss the report and its recommendations. The forum stressed the need for collaboration between governments and stakeholders to overcome challenges in the food processing sector and to promote the production of healthy, safe, and high-quality processed foods across the continent.

The Malabo Montpellier Forum serves as a critical platform for dialogue among decision-makers in African agriculture, nutrition, and food security, leveraging evidence from the Malabo Montpellier Panel, a group of 17 leading experts in these fields, to drive policy innovation and sustainable development.

With Africa’s youth poised to become a powerhouse, the food processing sector stands as a beacon of hope, ready to create jobs, drive growth, and ensure a more prosperous future for the continent.
