Doctor’s Strike: Junior Doctors Announce Nationwide Service Withdrawal from October 7

A Nationwide doctor’s strike is set to hit Ghana’s health sector as the Junior Doctors Association of Ghana has announced a complete withdrawal of services starting Tuesday, October 7, 2025. The Association says the doctor’s strike has become necessary after months of what they describe as neglect and unfair treatment.

In a statement dated October 2 and signed by President Dr. Louisa Afia Nkrumah and General Secretary Dr. Rhoda Wun-nam Amadu, the Association revealed that over 200 junior doctors have worked for between 10 and 14 months without pay. They further allege that some medical officers who were previously on government payroll have had their salaries suspended without explanation, adding to frustrations ahead of the doctor’s strike.

The statement also highlighted that more than 800 medical officers have been awaiting posting for the past 16 months, despite numerous engagements with authorities. According to the Association, goodwill efforts shown to the government have not yielded any tangible solutions, prompting the impending doctor’s strike.

As part of the directive, outpatient services nationwide will be suspended from October 7 to 9, marking the first phase of the doctor’s strike action.
