Next NDC Government Will Build National Theatre in Kumasi – Mahama

john mahama:president of Ghana

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, will rehabilitate the National Theatre in Accra and build another one in Kumasi to support content creators in the region if he wins this year’s election.

Speaking at a meeting with a section of stakeholders in the creative industry in Kumasi on Tuesday, Mr. Mahama noted that the party made the promise in its 2020 manifesto and will ensure that the next NDC government fulfills it.

“In our 2020 manifesto, we promised to build Ghana’s second national theatre in Kumasi. We have not reneged on our promise, and we are repeating that if we come into power, we will build our second theatre in Kumasi,” he said.

John Mahama lamented the poor state of the National Theatre in Accra and revealed that the plan also includes modernizing the Theatre with state-of-the-art equipment to serve as a creative hub for artists nationwide.

“National Film theatre since the Chinese helped us to build under Rawlings’s time till now, it has not been rehabilitated.

“A lot of things are in bad shape at the theatre. The curtains cannot be drawn, and the stage is in bad shape, so it is time for us to rehabilitate the building so it can help the creative industry, he said.

Electoral Commission-  Fake news poses  threat to the 2024 elections.

Electoral Commission
Electoral Commission Mrs. Jean Mensa

The Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed concerns that fake news and disinformation could disrupt the December 7 general elections, potentially undermining voter confidence and threatening a peaceful process.

To mitigate these risks, the EC stressed the importance of verifying information before sharing it with the public.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, the EC’s Director of Training, highlighted that unchecked misinformation could confuse voters, incite tensions, and damage the election’s credibility.

In a media interview on November 12, Dr. Quaicoo mentioned that the EC is working to enhance its communication channels to ensure accurate information is promptly disseminated.

He  encouraged voters to use verified sources for election updates and to report any suspicious or unverified information.

“And I said that my greatest fear for Election 2024 is misinformation. Because both the traditional and the social media at times are in a hurry to put forward information without checking the authenticity. “So I am saying that I am seeing ahead of us where people will come out with some videos that may not even be related to Ghana’s election.”

Akua Donkor To Remain in 3rd Position on Ballot Paper – EC

akua donkor

The printing of presidential ballot papers for the 2024 elections is set to proceed without any alterations. As a result, Akua Donkor’s image and party symbol will still appear in the third position on the ballot paper.

This means that the positions of the presidential candidates remain unchanged. However, any ballots cast in Akua Donkor’s name will be annulled and will not count.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa made the disqualification known at an emergency Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, November 12.

Jean Mensa explained that Philip Appiah Kubi, the replacement flagbearer for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has been disqualified due to errors and alleged irregularities discovered in his nomination documents. She explained that the requirement is that, there should be two registered voters from each district endorsing the nomination form of a presidential candidate.

In this instance, when the commission examined Philip Appiah Kubi’s nomination forms, there were illegalities as he used names and details of registered voters in different districts to represent other districts.  Based on that, the commission decided to disqualify Philip Appiah Kubi of the GFP from partaking in the 2024 presidential election.

She said, the commission has chosen not to reorder the ballot positions to avoid delays and additional costs associated with reprinting. “We are almost 90 percent complete with the printing of presidential ballots, and you are also aware that following the passing of Madam Akua Donkor we requested the printing houses to cease printing until the law had taken its course.

“Now that the presidential candidate has been disqualified, the Commission wants to inform you that the positions will proceed on the current ballot.” She further indicated that the Commission would embark on an extensive public awareness campaign to sensitize the public and prevent them from voting for Akua Donkor.

“We will proceed with the name and image of Madam Akua Donkor, and we believe that a lot of discussions and advertisements will go to prevent the citizenry from voting for her,” she stated.

Background

Akua Donkor, who was the GFP’s presidential candidate died on October 28, 2024, at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, formerly known as Ridge Hospital.

Based on that, the EC suspended the printing of ballot papers and asked the GFP to nominate a replacement by November 8, 2024.

Philip Appiah Kubi was Akua Donkor’s vice presidential candidate, and following his nomination by the GFP to replace Akua Donkor, he submitted his forms to the EC last week within the window the commission gave for the GFP to nominate a replacement.

Bank of Ghana to Commission New $250 million Headquarters on November 20

Bank of Ghana over increased policy rate

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will inaugurate its newly built headquarters, “The Bank Square,” on November 20 in Accra. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be the special guest of honor at the ceremony, which will commence at 10 a.m. The event is by invitation only.

However, the construction of the new headquarters has sparked debate in July this year, especially in light of the BoG’s reported 10.5 billion cedis loss in 2023. The bank paid approximately $250 million for the project, a move that has attracted scrutiny from several stakeholders.

Member of Parliament Yusif Suleman raised concerns about the rationale behind the Bank of Ghana proceeding with the high-cost project in the face of such significant losses. In response, Mr. Stephen Opata, Special Advisor to the BoG Governor, justified the project by stating that stopping construction would have been inefficient and incurred additional costs due to the advanced stage of development and the presence of contractors on site.

Mr. Opata further clarified that while the losses were concerning, they were due to multiple factors beyond the new headquarters’ construction. “I hear you clearly,” he acknowledged, “but this project was way advanced. Stopping it mid-way would not have been the best decision under the circumstances.”

The BoG’s position is that the headquarters project was crucial to its operational needs and that halting construction would have been more financially detrimental.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Akrofoum, the Vice President highlighted the government’s commitment to granting mining permits to miners for the responsible execution of their work through the community mining scheme.

He also noted that the establishment of a mineral development bank specifically for miners, similar to the Agric Development Bank for farmers will significantly support them.

“I am pleased to announce the establishment of a mineral development bank, dedicated to supporting responsible mining practices, similar to the Agric development bank for farmers,” he said.

“We will collaborate with the Geological Survey Department to utilize their maps pinpointing gold-rich areas, ensuring a strategic approach to setting up community mining schemes without resorting to trial and error,” he further stated.

The Women’s Trade Empowerment Fund will enhance women based businesses- Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, has unveiled plans to establish a Women’s Trade Empowerment Fund aimed at supporting women in enhancing their businesses.

During a campaign rally at the Obuasi East Constituency, Dr. Bawumia noted the significance of this initiative, which will enable women to access the fund using only their Ghana cards.

This streamlined process is expected to have a transformative impact on the livelihoods of local women traders.

“We are introducing the Women’s Trade Empowerment Fund to provide crucial support to women-led businesses. Unlike traditional banks that require extensive documentation, this fund will be accessible with just your Ghana card,” he explained.

In addition to the Women’s Trade Empowerment Fund, Dr. Bawumia highlighted other initiatives such as the Buy Ghana First campaign, which aims to enhance local businesses by prioritizing the purchase of domestically produced goods by government agencies.

These efforts are designed to stimulate the domestic economy and create job opportunities.

Dr. Bawumia also asserted that despite facing challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, the NPP government has surpassed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in various sectors.

“Despite the global crises, including COVID-19, our government has consistently outperformed the NDC in every sector of the economy,” he emphasized.

NMC calls for peace in Bawku.

National Media Commission
National Media Commission calls for peace in Bawku

The National Media Commission (NMC) has called on journalists to actively promote peace and stability in Bawku, where conflicts have impacted the community’s safety and development.

NMC Chair Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo highlighted that media practitioners should focus on peace-building in their reporting, as their influence can either escalate tensions or aid reconciliation.

Speaking to journalists at a training workshop in the Ashanti Region, Ayeboafo emphasized the media’s role in shaping public perception and fostering peaceful coexistence.

“Any issue anywhere in Ghana affects us all. We can’t sit in Kumasi or Accra and assume we’re unaffected,” he said.

Given the Bolgatanga-Walewale road, how can anyone suggest people can be killed? Will you avoid Bolgatanga because of the Bawku conflict? When will you become a victim?

The workshop for journalists across the region aimed to teach conflict-sensitive reporting skills, highlighting the role of media in promoting dialogue and understanding rather than division.

Ayeboafo called on media outlets to work with local leaders, peace advocates, and other stakeholders for balanced coverage, emphasizing unity and community well-being in Bawku and beyond.

The recent violence surge follows Seidu Abagre’s return, a rival chief installed by the Nayiri, who was in exile after an arrest warrant in February 2023 for his contested installation as chief in Nalerigu.

A High Court in Kumasi overturned the warrant on October 17, 2024, allowing Abagre’s return.

His arrival in Bawku on October 26 reignited a chieftaincy dispute, leading to gunfire exchanges that initially left two people dead and several injured.
