A devastating road crash involving a passenger bus, a fuel tanker and a cargo truck has claimed the lives of about 13 people at Odumase, near Konongo, on the Kumasi-Accra Highway in the Ashanti Region.
Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries in the collision and have been taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.
According to preliminary accounts, the crash involved a cargo truck transporting tomatoes, a passenger bus and an empty fuel tanker. While the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, eyewitnesses allege that the collision was triggered after one of the vehicles attempted a wrongful overtaking manoeuvre, resulting in a head-on impact.
The force of the collision left several occupants trapped in the mangled vehicles, prompting an immediate response from emergency personnel. Rescue teams worked to extricate victims from the wreckage before transporting the injured to hospitals for urgent medical care.
Recovery operations also commenced at the scene to remove the damaged vehicles and clear debris from the highway.
The accident caused significant traffic congestion along the busy Kumasi-Accra Highway, with motorists experiencing long delays as police and emergency responders coordinated rescue efforts and managed traffic.
Authorities are yet to confirm the official death toll or release the identities of the victims. Investigations are expected to determine the circumstances that led to one of the deadliest road crashes recorded on the stretch in recent months.
The latest tragedy has once again drawn attention to road safety on Ghana’s major highways, particularly the dangers associated with reckless overtaking and other risky driving practices.
