The Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has cut the sod for the construction of a state-of-the-art court complex in Cape Coast as part of activities marking the 150th anniversary of Ghana’s Supreme Court.
The project is expected to strengthen judicial service delivery in the Central Region, improve access to justice for residents, and reinforce Cape Coast’s historic role as the birthplace of Ghana’s modern judiciary.
The sod-cutting ceremony forms part of celebrations commemorating 150 years of the Supreme Court and highlights the judiciary’s commitment to expanding access to justice through modern infrastructure.
Speaking at the event, Richard Agyei Frimpong, Chairman of the Judiciary at 150 Planning Committee, said the existing Cape Coast court complex, built in the mid-1970s, has deteriorated over time and no longer meets the needs of the justice system.
According to him, replacing the aging facility is appropriate given Cape Coast’s historic significance as the foundation of Ghana’s judicial system.
The ceremony was preceded by a courtesy call on the Omanhene of Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, who stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law as the bedrock of peace and national development.
He urged citizens and leaders alike to resolve disputes through lawful means rather than violence, noting that respect for the law remains essential to maintaining peace and justice.
The Omanhene also offered prayers for wisdom and strength for the judiciary as it continues to uphold justice and the rule of law across the country.
