President Mahama Declares Assets to Auditor General

mahama declares assets to auditor general

President John Dramani Mahama has publicly declared his assets and presented them to the Auditor General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu. This complies with Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Office Holder’s Declaration of Assets and Disqualifications Act, 1998 (Act 550).

This move marks a shift from the usual private submissions, as Mahama aims to promote transparency in the asset declaration process. President Mahama emphasized that corruption thrives in secrecy and stressed the need for preventive measures rather than solely focusing on punishment. “ I’ve always maintained that while it is all well and good to punish corruption, a more effective way of addressing the canker is preventing it from occurring in the first place.

I honestly believe that if properly curated and enforced, the asset declaration process can become a sustainable tool for tackling corruption. Corruption by nature is insidious and thrives under the cover of darkness. The more light that is shown on it, the more likely that it will be fought successfully. In times past, I would privately have presented these forms to the Auditor General in fulfillment of my statutory obligation. I’ve taken this step of presenting these forms publicly as a way of injecting some openness and transparency into the process of assets declaration.”

Mahama further called for the enforcement of asset declaration laws to make them a sustainable tool in fighting corruption. To reinforce this commitment, he directed the Chief of Staff to ensure that all appointees declare their assets by March 31, 2025, warning that failure to comply would result in severe sanctions. “I’ve taken this step to send an unmistakable signal to all public office holders, especially those that I have appointed, that I take the declaration of assets very seriously and expect full compliance from them.”

“I’ve asked the Chief of Staff to send word to all appointees to ensure that they declare their assets by the end of the first quarter of this year, that is, by 31st March 2025. I wish to stress that any appointee failing to meet this deadline would face severe sanctions, not excluding removal from office.”

Mahama also urged the ongoing constitutional review process to strengthen asset declaration laws, suggesting that declared assets should be published before and after holding public office. He believes this will help curb the phenomenon of unexplained wealth gained through corrupt means.“I believe that we must move to a regime where the assets so declared can be published before and after public office, so that the phenomenon of unexplained and overnight wealth, obviously earned through the proceeds of corruption, can be checked. I trust that a healthy debate can be had over this issue and consensus built on the way forward so that collectively we can defeat the wholesome canker of corruption.”

Following Mahama’s address, Auditor General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu welcomed the initiative and emphasized the need for improvements in the process.

Asiedu supported the proposal to publish asset declarations upon submission and at the end of a public official’s tenure. He stressed that a more transparent system would enhance accountability and build public trust in governance.

“If you submit your assets and declaration forms, we should be able to publish it freely. And the time that you are leaving office too, we will publish it to see the changes that have happened ever since you started in the office. So on behalf of myself and my staff from the study service, we welcome his excellency’s wonderful idea.”

He assured that the Audit Service is committed to supporting any reforms that will make asset declaration more effective in combating corruption.

University of Ghana Denies Claims of GHS11M Graduation Fee Collection Without Medallions

university of Ghana

The University of Ghana (UG) has dismissed claims that it collected over GHS11 million in graduation fees without providing medallions.

A statement from UG’s Public Affairs Directorate on February 17 labeled the reports misleading.

The university clarified that 15,776 graduands each paid GHS500, totaling GHS7,888,000—not GHS11 million as alleged.

The fee covered gown rental, congregation publication, medallions, scroll holders, souvenirs, water, and administrative expenses.

UG admitted that procurement delays affected the distribution of medallions and scroll holders but assured graduates of their delivery soon.

A February 10 notice had already informed graduates about the delay in receiving these items.

University of Ghana criticized news houses for publishing a sensational story without verifying readily available facts. Parts of the statement from the university read, “It is, therefore, unfortunate for Joy News to put out a sensational story without recourse to readily available facts. We urge the public to disregard these misleading reports and rely on official University communications for accurate information.”

The university urged the public to disregard misleading reports and rely on official communications for accurate information.

The Univerity of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards in all operations, including graduation ceremonies.

History of the University of Ghana

The University of Ghana (UG) was established in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast following recommendations by the Asquith Commission on Higher Education in British colonies.

The University College of the Gold Coast was officially founded to provide university education, learning, and research.

The university’s first principal, Mr. David Mowbray Balme, was instrumental in shaping its early development. His leadership established a strong academic foundation, fostering a community of scholars dedicated to excellence.

To ensure high academic standards, the British government set up an Inter-Universities Council, which advised UG on academic affairs and faculty appointments. This affiliation with British universities helped maintain rigorous academic standards and facilitated access to funding from the United Kingdom government.

Over the decades, UG has evolved into a world-class research-intensive university, producing graduates who contribute to national and global development.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has assured health workers in the Upper West Region of the government’s commitment to supporting their fight against Cerebral Spinal Meningitis (CSM). The region has recorded 129 suspected cases, with 22 confirmed and 16 deaths.

Speaking before donating medical supplies worth over 300,000 Ghana cedis, Bagbin described the rising cases of CSM as an “attack by the enemy” and urged health workers to intensify efforts to combat the disease. He commended medical personnel for their dedication and pledged further support.

“Right here we are on a serious attack by the enemy. And so we’ll do all we can to support you, the health workers in the region and in the sector. This is just the first. As we go back, we’ll look for more,” he assured.

He expressed hope that the situation would improve, stating, “I’m happy that you’ve made this difference and that you’ve been able to contain it so far. We hope that it will stay that way and that there will be no deaths.”

The donated items included IV fluids, antibiotics, and spinal needles for lumbar puncture. Bagbin handed them over to the Upper West Regional Minister, Lawyer Charles Lwanga Puozuing, who in turn presented them to the Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, Damien Punguyire.

Education Minister Announces Return of PTAs to Public Schools

PTA

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced the reinstatement of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA’s) in public school management.

The decision aims to improve collaboration between parents and teachers, enhancing student learning and overall school development.

Speaking at a public forum, the minister emphasized the importance of PTA’s in strengthening community involvement in education.

He expressed his happiness in reintroducing PTA’s under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration. He said this is to help parents and teachers work together to improve learning. “I am particularly happy to announce that PTA’s will be introduced back into the management of education…for parents and teachers to work together to improve learning outcomes in our educational institutions.”

He also expressed optimism that the PTA will help support educational institutions in producing quality human capital. He said, “…PTA’s support our educational institutions to produce quality human capital for the country,” he stated.

Previously, PTA’s played a key role in school policies, but their influence declined in recent years. The reinstatement will support schools in addressing issues like infrastructure, student discipline, and academic performance.

With this policy shift, the government seeks to create an inclusive education system where all stakeholders contribute to quality learning. Public schools are expected to reintegrate PTA’s into their management frameworks in the coming months.

STEM Education Key to Ghana’s Transformation – Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum

STEM education

Former Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has reiterated the significance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in driving Ghana’s economic and industrial transformation. Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Dr. Adutwum emphasized that aligning education with national development is crucial for meaningful progress.

“The biggest challenge facing education in Ghana when I took over was the lack of connection between education and national transformation,” he stated. According to him, an education system that does not contribute to the transformation of a country is ineffective.

He emphasized, “When the education system is not relevant to the socio-economic transformation of your country, it’s education to nowhere.” Dr. Adutwum cited his inspiration from China’s approach to industrialization, referencing former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping’s decision to prioritize STEM education by restructuring teacher training and emphasizing mathematics and science at the high school level.

He said under his tenure, Ghana took deliberate steps to enhance STEM education, recognizing its role in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He said the emphasis on STEM was to make sure that in this 21st century, Ghana is highlighted to create a competitive economy.

“So when you hear STEM education, it’s not just children coming to school. When you see them doing robotics, we see them flying drones, we see them doing things that we’ve never done before. It’s creating the next generation workforce in the 21st century, the fourth industrial revolution, who will lead the transformation of Ghana.”

To address this, Dr. Adutwum said he spearheaded the development of a bachelor’s degree in STEM education at the University of Cape Coast. “ today I’m happy that Cape Coast has submitted, at the time I was leaving, they have submitted their curricula for training of STEM teachers to GTEC,” he disclosed.

He said two STEM colleges of education were also established during his tenure to train the next generation of STEM teachers. He equally highlighted Ghana’s strides in building STEM schools and centers across the country. He said, “with three standing, new ones that we built were about,11, at the time that I was leaving office.” He mentioned notable ones like Abomosu in the Eastern Region, Bosomtwe Girls, and STEM centers in places like Accra High.

He said these centers are equipped with all STEM equipment and software programming tools to foster practical STEM learning. Dr. Adutwum highlighted Ghana’s need to scale up its production of engineers. He said a pre-engineering program was introduced at UMAT and Pentecost University for students who did not study science in high school but are interested in engineering.

Dr. Adutwum urged for a sustained commitment to STEM education, stressing that its integration into the education system would be the foundation for Ghana’s economic transformation. “You catch them young. They get excited. So they don’t apply to medicine, and if they don’t get in, then they go to engineering.” If you get a student who is really, really excited about engineering from high school, he will become a better engineer than the person who didn’t want to do engineering. But because he didn’t get medicine, then he found himself in engineering,” he asserted.

With the national education forum set to review Ghana’s education system, stakeholders are expected to build on these initiatives to ensure that STEM education remains a core driver of the country’s development.
