Zuarungu SHS Shut Down After A Violent Ethnic Clash

Zuarungu

Zuarungu Senior High School has been indefinitely closed down following a violent clash between students of Gurune and Kusasi ethnic groups. The incident resulted in significant property destruction and raised serious security concerns.

The closure was ordered by the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, after tensions escalated on Sunday, July 20, culminating in a chaotic brawl on the school campus. According to eyewitnesses and school authorities, the violence was triggered by an alleged theft of a mobile phone, which quickly spiraled into an ethnic confrontation.

Zuarungu Violence Escalates, Properties Destroyed

During the melee, several school properties were vandalized, with reports confirming that some facilities were set ablaze. The exact extent of the damage is yet to be assessed, but early indications suggest severe losses.

Security agencies have since intervened, arresting four students in connection with the violence. Three suspects are currently in police custody, while the fourth is on the run. Alarmingly, the fugitive is believed to have fled with a police officer’s firearm magazine, raising further concerns about the potential for continued unrest.

Hon. Atanga stated that the decision to close down the school was necessary to restore order and protect lives. “The safety of students and staff is paramount. We will not allow lawlessness to take root in our educational institutions,” he said.

Investigations are currently ongoing, with heightened security presence in and around the school. The Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is working closely with law enforcement agencies to apprehend the fugitive and prevent further escalation.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is also expected to issue further directives regarding the reopening of Zuarungu SHS. These directives will include measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
