Zoomlion MD Urges Parents to Support Children’s Extracurricular Activities

Mrs. Gloria Opoku-Anti, Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, has encouraged parents to actively support their children’s involvement in extracurricular activities, citing the positive impact on creativity and environmental consciousness. Speaking at the grand finale of the 5th School Sanitation Solutions Challenge and the 3rd Children Sanitation Fair in Accra, she commended the innovative efforts of children to promote sustainability.

“Parents can support this venture by allowing their wards to participate in ZoomKids and other extracurricular activities,” she said.

Zoomlion Foundation, the company’s corporate social responsibility wing, has been at the forefront of educating children on environmental sanitation for the past five years. Through its ZoomKids initiative, the foundation has established over 400 school clubs nationwide, promoting responsible sanitation practices among students.

Opoku-Anti expressed her excitement at the program’s success, noting the growing interest of children, even preschoolers, in adopting good sanitation habits.

In support of the cause, Jenifer Boapeng, a Director at the Ministry of Sanitation, representing Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, reiterated the ministry’s dedication to addressing Ghana’s sanitation challenges. She emphasized that sanitation is a shared responsibility, adding, “The responsibility is not laid solely on children, but on all of us to reflect on how to improve sanitation.”

World Vision Ghana’s National Director, Laura Cristina Del Valle, also highlighted the significance of access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene for children’s well-being. She stressed that these services are crucial to World Vision’s mission of ensuring that every child lives “life in all its fullness.”

Del Valle added that World Vision’s commitment to WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services extends across various settings, including schools, communities, healthcare facilities, and public spaces, as part of their broader mission to improve child well-being.

The event’s highlight was the 5th School Sanitation Solutions Challenge, where four exceptional students were crowned winners after months of rigorous competition aimed at inspiring children to become sanitation-conscious change-makers.

Abdul Yazid Farah Timtoni Wumbei, 14, took home the first prize with 55 points, receiving GH¢6,000, a desktop computer for his school, and an opportunity for a study tour focused on sanitation projects. Esi Abakah Owusu followed closely with 54 points, earning the second prize of GH¢4,000 and a Samsung tablet. Candy Nana Adwoa Okwan claimed third place with 41.5 points, winning a Galaxy tablet and GH¢3,000, while Christina Sefakor Sedenkor placed fourth with 38.5 points, receiving a Samsung tablet, GH¢2,000, a desktop computer, and waste bins.

Zoomlion Ghana’s dedication to initiatives like the School Sanitation Solutions Challenge highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to fostering environmental sustainability and promoting community development.
