The current state of the economy is due to mismanagement- Former CPP General Secretary

Former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has attributed the current economic challenges facing Ghana to mismanagement.

She expressed concern over the alarming rate at which prices of goods and services are increasing.

While economists define inflation as a gradual rise in prices, Nana Jantuah argues that the situation in Ghana is quite different.

“I went to buy tyres, and the vendor told me it was GHS 800. When I returned a few weeks later, the price had jumped by GHS 300. Is that a slow increase?” she questioned.

She also noted that the price of bread has surged from GHS 7 to as much as GHS 22 in some areas.

During an interview on the Orange Sunrise with Alfa Ali, the former general secretary highlighted the anxiety among traders due to the fluctuating value of the Cedi, which has led them to inflate prices to safeguard against potential losses.

“I want Bawumia to come and tell me what he plans to do to stabilize the Cedi,” she urged.

Nana Jantuah remarked that the strength of the Ghana Cedi was actually better during the COVID-19 pandemic than it is now.

She expressed disappointment that the economy is not as strong and robust as she had anticipated.

She criticized the government for failing to meet the expectations of Ghanaians, particularly regarding the implementation of its policies and initiatives such as the One District, One Factory plan.

Despite the New Patriotic Party defeating the NDC by nearly a million votes in 2016, she noted that the party has not fulfilled the hopes of the populace.

She further condemned the government’s tendency to blame the current economic difficulties on external factors like COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.
