A massive fire broke out at Kejetia Market in Kumasi early on the morning of Friday, March 21, 2025. The fire, which began at around 6:00 am, spread quickly, destroying several shops and properties in the central business district.
The inferno initially started in the Blue Light arena, located close to Hello FM, and spread rapidly to adjacent buildings. The fire caused significant losses for business owners, particularly in the sections of the market dealing in second-hand clothing, mobile phones, accessories, jewelry, and clothing.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire ignited from a flickering electricity pole in the area. This caused a spark on the top floor of one of the buildings, which quickly escalated into a full-blown fire.
Reports indicate that some panicked traders rushed to break into their shops to salvage their wares. Firefighters from six tenders were dispatched to the scene, but the congested market and narrow alleyways hampered their ability to fight the flames effectively.
Eyewitnesses expressed concern over the delayed response from the fire service, which may have worsened the situation.
Despite multiple fire tenders arriving later, firefighters faced significant challenges in containing the blaze. The two-story buildings housing several shops were severely damaged, with traders counting their losses.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation, while the affected traders grapple with the destruction of their properties.
This fire outbreak in the Kejetia market adds to the numerous fire outbreaks that have occurred in the region this year.
