10-year-old Lisa Laryea, whose battle with leukemia touched the hearts of many, has received assistance from businessman Ibrahim Mahama. This act of compassion is to undergo a $110,000 treatment in South Africa. Mr. Ibrahim Mahama has once again demonstrated his commitment to making a difference in the lives of those in need.

Lisa Laryea, together with her mother, left Accra on Sunday [Nov 24, 2024] to South Africa for treatment. The two flew to South Africa via an emergency charted Air Ambulance to seek specialized care. This care would give Lisa a fighting chance at recovery.

Mr Ibrahim Mahama was present at the Kotoka International Airport Terminal 2 to ensure the smooth journey process. Rafik Mahama, an aide to Mr. Ibrahim, explained, “When we learned about Lisa’s condition on social media, we knew we had to step in and help.

Every child deserves the opportunity to live a healthy and happy life. When it comes to saving human life, our father and boss, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, doesn’t consider the cost.

He has unlimited empathy towards humanity. He gives the instructions to everyone, and we work to make sure we get the job done properly. Because the flight was a 6 am scheduled chartered flight, I got to the Ridge Hospital at 3 am today; we wanted to make sure we got everything done properly.

The Doctors are on standby in South Africa. By God’s grace, Lisa will come back stronger.”  Lisa’s mother, overwhelmed with emotion, expressed her deep gratitude to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama. She said, “We never imagined that someone of his stature would care so deeply about our daughter’s health. He has given Lisa the gift of hope, and we will be forever grateful.”

This act has also stirred a wave of support and commendation from a cross-section of Ghanaians.

What is Leukemia?

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood, characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal blood cells. This uncontrolled growth takes place in your bone marrow, where most of your body’s blood is made. Leukemia cells are usually immature (still developing) white blood cells. The term leukemia comes from the Greek words for “white” (leukos) and “blood” (haima).

It is a malignant progressive disease in which the bone marrow and other blood-forming organs produce increased numbers of immature or abnormal leucocytes. These suppress the production of normal blood cells, leading to anemia and other symptoms.

Unlike other cancers, leukemia doesn’t generally form a mass (tumor) that shows up in imaging tests, such as X-rays or CT scans.

There are many types of leukemia. Some are more common in children, while others are more common in adults. Treatment depends on the type of leukemia and other factors.
