Ghana has launched a renewable energy initiative to electrify 150 off-grid island and lake communities across the country.

The government announced the expansion following the successful commissioning of mini-grids in Azizakpe, Alorkem, and Aflive.

These Ada East District communities now have electricity for the first time, thanks to funding from the Swiss government agency SECO.

Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor unveiled the broader electrification plan during the commissioning ceremony.

He said the new programme aims to bring power to over 250,000 people living in hard-to-reach areas of Ghana.

Jinapor called the 150 off-grid community project a major step toward economic inclusion and improved livelihoods.

He emphasised that this drive aligns with Ghana’s “Light for Life Programme” targeting 99.8% national electricity coverage.

“This expansion is crucial to achieving energy equity and strengthening Ghana’s renewable energy capacity,” the Minister stated.

The newly powered mini-grids are expected to boost local productivity, support small enterprises, and improve community living standards.
