MOBILE MONEY FREQUENT ATTACKS

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG) has expressed serious concerns over a recent surge in attacks on its members.

In just the past month, three operators have been attacked and tragically killed.

The first victim, Patricia Nimako, a vendor in Krofrom, was attacked on February 13, 2025, right in front of her shop.

The attackers made off with 10,000 cedis.

Another victim, 33-year-old Augustine Mensah, was murdered by robbers at Manso-Asamang while returning home from work after completing a transaction at a customer’s house.

A 25-year-old mobile money vendor, known as Junior, was also found dead in his room at the Kwadaso Onion Market in Kumasi on March 8.

His assailants brutally killed him by slitting his throat with what is believed to be a cutlass or another sharp object.

While the mobile money business has seen substantial growth and high patronage in the country, it has unfortunately attracted the attention of criminals.

These attacks have instilled fear in potential new entrants considering starting a mobile money business and have caused anxiety among current operators.

In an interview with Orange Business News, Edward Bediako, the regional organizer of the association, stated that members are now working in constant fear due to the escalating violence.

He called on authorities to increase police visibility in order to protect the mobile money sector.
