The Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed concerns that fake news and disinformation could disrupt the December 7 general elections, potentially undermining voter confidence and threatening a peaceful process.

To mitigate these risks, the EC stressed the importance of verifying information before sharing it with the public.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, the EC’s Director of Training, highlighted that unchecked misinformation could confuse voters, incite tensions, and damage the election’s credibility.

In a media interview on November 12, Dr. Quaicoo mentioned that the EC is working to enhance its communication channels to ensure accurate information is promptly disseminated.

He  encouraged voters to use verified sources for election updates and to report any suspicious or unverified information.

“And I said that my greatest fear for Election 2024 is misinformation. Because both the traditional and the social media at times are in a hurry to put forward information without checking the authenticity. “So I am saying that I am seeing ahead of us where people will come out with some videos that may not even be related to Ghana’s election.”
