Election Updates: Asokwa New Town Assembly Member Protests Polling Station Incident

ghana election 2024

The Assembly Member for Asokwa New Town, Mr. Oscar Richards, earlier this morning has raised concerns over alleged irregularities at the New Asafo polling station.

Mr. Richards accused the presiding officer of enforcing unconstitutional actions during the ongoing electoral process. He alleged that the officer had unlawfully removed one of his party’s polling agents from the station. He said this contradicts established regulations that permit two party agents per polling station at any time.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Richards described the presiding officer’s actions as a blatant disregard for electoral rules.

In response to the incident, Mr. Richards said he had lodged a formal complaint with the district officer. He also called on Mr. Gyamera, the designated returning officer for the area, to intervene and address the issue. “He should intervene, if not, we cannot accept one agent over there,” he further stated,” he said.

Efforts to contact Mr. Gyamera have so far been unsuccessful, but Mr. Richards expressed hope that the matter would be resolved promptly. “The boss should come and ensure that the right thing is done,” he emphasized.

This development adds to heightened tensions during the election, as stakeholders continue to advocate for fairness and transparency in the voting process.
