Dumsor was not a financial problem- Nana Yaa Jantuah claims

Nana Yaa Jantuah, a former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has asserted that the persistent power outages known as “Dumsor” were not primarily caused by financial challenges, but rather by a lack of power generation capacity.

She explained that the Akosombo Dam, which was expected to produce 1,200 MW of power, has seen its output decline to approximately 600 MW.

“People are saying there was no money; that is not true. I categorically state that the issue was a lack of generation,” she said.

In an interview on Orange Sunrise with Alfa Ali, Nana Jantuah acknowledged that while there have been gas supply challenges in the country, the effective operation of the Akosombo and Kpone dams would have mitigated these issues.

She noted that gas and fuel challenges have always existed, and if the hydroelectric systems were functioning optimally, the impact would be minimal.

She expressed that electricity tariffs should have decreased due to the lower costs associated with hydro power generation, especially now that the Akosombo Dam is operating at a better capacity compared to the periods under former Presidents Kufuor and Mahama.

Nana Yaa Jantuah also dismissed claims that the Mahama administration signed unsustainable deals with certain power producers.

“I’ve told them (NPP) to show me letters of which PPAs that have been signed that the plant is not working,” she stated.
