The debate surrounding changes to DStv pricing and service delivery has ignited a national conversation in Ghana, fueled by sharp exchanges between Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament Sammy George. The heart of the dispute is whether MultiChoice, the operator of DStv, is delivering genuine value to subscribers under new arrangements or merely repackaging existing services.

Sammy George, has been vocal on consumer rights in the broadcasting sector, strongly defending the revised agreement between MultiChoice and Ghanaian regulators. He argued that the reforms were designed to benefit consumers by eliminating unfair practices and introducing mechanisms to ensure greater value for subscribers.

A key highlight of the deal, according to the MP, is the crackdown on illegal decoders that had been undermining legitimate subscriptions. “By far, DStv has deactivated close to a million ghost boxes sourced from Nigeria. These were unauthorized decoders operating illegally in Ghana and undermining genuine subscriptions. This is part of a broader effort to clean up the system and deliver real value to paying customers,” Sammy George stated.

He stressed that the reforms were not aimed at weakening MultiChoice but rather at protecting Ghanaian consumers who have long complained about high subscription costs and limited transparency. “We have not set out to destroy a business. What we want is transparency, fairness, and value for the ordinary Ghanaian who pays for the service,” he added.

Effective today, October 1, 2025, MultiChoice has upgraded all bouquets in what the government is touting as an “unprecedented value offer.” The new arrangement shifts subscribers up one tier across the board:

  • Paddy subscribers move to Access
  • Access subscribers move to Family
  • Family moves to Compact
  • Compact moves to Compact Plus
  • Compact Plus subscribers move to Premium

Even premium customers, who already pay the highest fees, are being roped into the offer through automatic entry into a draw to win fully paid trips to selected Premier League matches, subject to terms and conditions.

Government has presented the move as proof that it has secured value for consumers, while MultiChoice says it is responding to market feedback.
