Finance Minister Ato Forson reflected on his unexpected rise to his current position, calling his journey one of destiny and perseverance. He attributed his growth in public service to invaluable experiences and mentorship from influential leaders.

Speaking with the media after presenting the 2025 Budget on March 11, Ato Forson admitted he never anticipated becoming Finance Minister under President John Mahama’s administration. “Certainly not, but we kept pushing. It’s a matter of destiny, and destiny has brought me this far,” he stated.

Ato Forson paid tribute to the late former President John Evans Atta Mills, acknowledging his profound influence on his political career. He credited Atta Mills for inspiring him and others to pursue public service and strong governance.

Addressing Parliament while presenting the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy, Ato Forson recalled his early years as a parliamentarian in 2009. He described his progression from a backbencher to a Finance Committee member, then Deputy Finance Minister, and eventually Finance Minister. He emphasized that each role prepared him for the critical task of managing Ghana’s financial affairs.

The finance minister stressed his resolve to revamp Ghana’s economy and improve citizens’ lives through well-founded policies. He assured Parliament that the Mahama-led administration would comply with public procurement processes and respect budgetary limits.

He announced the government’s 24-hour economy policy, aimed at boosting economic productivity by encouraging businesses to operate around the clock. Ato Forson also highlighted the cocoa sector’s struggles, citing unsustainable debts and a nearly 50% production drop over three years. “COCOBOD’s outstanding debt stands at 32 billion Cedis,” he revealed.

Ato Forson reaffirmed his commitment to economic stability, pledging to support President Mahama in restoring Ghana’s financial health and national progress.
